 Dinghy sailing courses

This is the RYA dinghy scheme.  At Weir Wood, we offer all the courses, but not necessarily every year.   Day Sailing is a coastal course, which we run at Cobnor, Chichester Harbour.

Start Sailing - 2010 courses - 22 & 29 May; 12 & 19 June; 7 and 14 August (in single-handers)

Course content

Introduction to the sport of sailing. Covers all you need to know to get afloat under supervision.

Ability after course

Able to sail under supervision in light winds

Basic Skills - 2010 courses - 10, 17 & 24 July; 4, 11 & 18 September

Pre-course experience

Start Sailing or a little experience

Assumed knowledge

Know what to wear and have sailed under supervision

Course content

Rigging, launching, sailing in all directions. Capsize recovery and essential safety background

Ability after course

Able to sail safely and make sensible decisions in light winds

3 Saturdays

Start Racing 2010 - dates not confirmed - email for more info

Pre-course experience At least one season's sailing
Assumed knowledge Minimum Level 2
Course content All the skills required to enjoy club racing including how to maximise boat speed and how to outwit your opponents.  Recommended especially for anyone who would like to become an INSTRUCTOR.
Ability after course Able to take part in club racing in good conditions (depending on experience)

We're running the three courses below at the same time, and will pick elements of each to best suit participant's wishes and the available weather.  If you complete the course successfully, you can choose which certificate you receive.  

Advanced modules 2010 - 26 June, 3 & 10 July

Performance Sailing

Pre-course experience At least one season's sailing after Level 2
Assumed knowledge Minimum Level 2
Course content Coaching to improve your sailing, primarily in two person boats with spinnakers
Ability after course Able to sail faster and more efficiently in all conditions
Duration Minimum 2 days

Intermediate Skills 

Pre-course experience

At least one season's sailing

Assumed knowledge

Competent to Level 2

Course content

Training includes: launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail ashore and afloat, recovering a man overboard, anchoring.

Ability after course

Able to handle a wide range of situations afloat in moderate winds

Duration

3 days.  There's also an optional coastal weekend (below)
