Like most sports young sailor develop proficiency through practice with the support and guidance of more experience sailors. Weir wood Sailing Club provides to its youth members the opportunity to develop through a combination of Saturday afternoon sessions and more formal structured training.
After learning the basics (possibly by completing the Start Sailing course) the next stage of formal training would be the International Optimist Class Association (IOCA) Association (IOCA) Grade 1 Award. This course takes place on five consecutive Saturday's (10am-4pm) and aims to build upon the Start Sailing course to improve the following areas.
• Launch & Recovery – can launch and recover the boat from shore and a pontoon.
• Sailing Tech & Manoeuvres - can sail a figure of eight course, broad reach to broad reach, gibe and control speed.
• Clothing & equipment – has correct clothing for conditions.
• Capsize & Recovery – understand what to do in the event of a capsize.
• Safety – Can paddle an oppy round a shore course and is aware of the need to mind the boom.
• Meteorology – can find the wind direction using a burgee.
• Rope work – can tie basic sailing knots.
• 5 Essentials – knows and applies the basics aspects of good sailing.
Typically the child should be able to swim, have completed a basic start sailing course and will be between the ages of 7-10. The club provides the use of an Optimist dingy, safety helmet and buoyancy aid for the duration of the course, however the children will need clothing suitable for the conditions.
Prices per child for the courses are as follows: Non-members £105 (£20 refundable if you subsequently join the club), £85 for members.
The training group consists of a maximum of six children and so places on the beginners courses are in high demand. For further information or to check availability on a course please email beginners@wwsc.org.uk.
