WWSC Hire Fleet
The objective of the hire fleet it to encourage new members over the hurdle of buying their own boats. The ethos of the club is ultimately boat ownership, we are not trying to offer first class ‘pay as you go’ as a basis
of permanent membership. Any offers from members of free boats for the fleet are welcome.
All boats are serviceable though fairly old and a
bit tatty.
Cost is £5 per session (half a day) to help with maintenance, payable to the Officer of the Day (OOD) who will be around the race hut.
Boats can only be used at weekends or Wednesday evenings in the summer, when supervised sailing is permitted.
Please put everything back as you found it, and advise the OOD of any problems.
The fleet is maintained by Peter Lyle and Chris Moir.
All the boats are immediately on the left and right as you enter the final sailing area around the
Oppy ramp
(called ‘Oppy Bay’). Sails are hung up in the first garage in named bags.

|
Laser 1
(three of these) |
Old, usable, none of the newfangled ropes on them, just the original
kicker and cunningham |
Tippy, easy to right after a capsize, ok for taking a light weight
passenger for fun spin (sit in front of the mast), easy to pull up
the slipway.
One has green hull, two have orange hulls.
A
bit overpowered for lightweights in a blow.
You have to sleeve the sail over the two piece mast. |
|
Lightning
(two of these) |
Very good |
Slightly underpowered, good for youths, light weights and ladies.
Nice and sensitive to sail, not as tippy as the Lasers, easy to pull
up the slipway and manageable in a capsize. |
|
Leader
(two of these) |
Reasonable condition, serviceable |
An excellent cruising and racing dinghy. Can
take 3 or 4 people.
Reasonably stable, but has fairly big sails, so beginners just off
sailing courses should not take them out in windy weather (a Topper
or Laser would be easier to recover from a capsize).
There are two in the hire fleet, an older
Wooden one called 'Aqua', and a newer fibreglass version. Two strong
people could pull them up the slipway (ask for help if you are
struggling).
A capsize would be hard work, as a fair amount of bailing may be
required to get them going again. Very similar to the Wanderer in
most respects |
|
Wanderer |
Best boat in the fleet |
An all rounder, fine even for racing, yet more easily handled under
sail than the Leader (smaller sails, more stable hull). Will take 3
or 4 crew no problem. Very stable.
A
bit heavy |
|
Skipper |
Good |
Bath tub like, suitable for a slow family cruise, very underpowered
and safe, ideal for beginners.
Heavy |
|
Topper |
Good |
Very easy to sail singlehander, bomb-proof, easy to rig, easy to
right after capsize, light weight, made out of tupperware, suitable
for
people just finished a beginner's course
